Natural Benefics / Malefics

Day 6 of 100 · Beginner

Every planet falls into one of two camps — a gentle, protective benefic (Shubha) or a forceful, demanding malefic (Papa). This short lesson sorts all nine grahas and reveals the two “switchers”, the Moon and Mercury, that change sides. Watch it, then cast your own chart below to see which of yours are which.

Benefics vs malefics — the big idea

Every planet is sorted into one of two camps by its natural temperament:benefics (Shubha grahas) and malefics (Papa grahas). The course's proverb: a malefic can trouble you physically and mentally, while a benefic, at worst, causes only mental distress.

A simple picture: a malefic is a knife — it carries extra force and audacity (tegimpu). Use it to cut a tomato and it does good; turn it on your hand and it harms. A benefic is the tomato itself — soft, and mostly only helpful. Malefics aren't "bad" — they're the fighters that give you the drive to push through hard things.

Two planets that switch sides

The Moon changes with its phase. From Shukla Paksha Ashtami(8th day of the waxing fortnight) through Krishna Paksha Saptami (7th day of the waning fortnight) it is bright and full — a strong benefic (Poorna Chandra). Around the new moon it loses its light and turns malefic (Ksheena Chandra). Quick shortcut: if the Moon is at least four signs away from the Sun, it has enough light to be strong.

Mercury is the chameleon. Alone in a sign, or sitting with benefics, it is a benefic. The moment it joins a malefic, it turns malefic — "a single drop of sourness curdles the whole pot of milk."

Why the Sun is a (mild) malefic

The Sun is the very source of light and life — Pratyaksha Daivam, God we can see. Yet it is counted a malefic: its heat is fierce and its light blinding (you can't stare at the midday Sun). Because it is also life-giving, though, it is treated as a mild malefic — never as harsh as Saturn or Mars.

What they do in a chart

Benefics safeguard you — they give patience, tolerance, and a wait-and-watch approach; they don't drag you into fights. Malefics are the fighters — they hand you raw drive and audacity, but when they dominate the mind they make a person aggressive and ever-ready for conflict. A good chart usually balances the two.

Natural Benefics & Malefics
Benefics (Shubha) — patience & protection
  • Jupiter — always benefic
  • Venus — always benefic
  • Mercury — alone or with benefics
  • Moon — when waxing / bright
Malefics (Papa) — force & audacity
  • Saturn & Mars — extreme malefics
  • Sun — mild malefic
  • Rahu & Ketu — shadow malefics
  • Mercury — when with malefics
  • Moon — when waning / dim
The two switchers
  • Moon → phase decides (Shukla Ashtami → Krishna Saptami = benefic; 4+ signs from the Sun)
  • Mercury → takes the nature of the planets it sits with
