"Sunya" = empty / void. A Sunya Tithi is a lunar day that falls "empty" relative to its month — the muhurta started on a sunya tithi tends to lose its substance halfway, like pouring water into a cracked pot. The classification is by lunar month + tithi pairing.
The two states
- Sunya — the month-tithi pairing is void. Avoid for any constructive starts (marriage, business launch, foundation laying).
- Regular — the pairing is not on the sunya list. Acceptable.
Classical sunya tithi pairs (sample)
The full list pairs each lunar month with several tithis; one widely-quoted set:
- Chaitra — Ashtami, Navami
- Vaisakha — Dwadashi
- Jyeshtha — Trayodashi, Chaturdashi
- Ashadha — Shashthi, Saptami
- Shravana — Dwitiya, Tritiya
- Bhadrapada — Pratipada, Dwitiya
- Ashvina — Chaturthi, Panchami
- Kartika — Dwitiya, Saptami
- Margashirsha — Saptami, Ashtami
- Pausha — Chaturthi, Panchami
- Magha — Panchami, Shashthi
- Phalguna — Tritiya, Chaturthi
The exact pairings vary by tradition; the calculator follows the most widely-accepted Drik panchanga list.
How the filter works
Every slot is labelled Sunya / Regular. By default both are allowed. For auspicious work, uncheck Sunya so only Regular slots survive.
Unlike Mrityu Tithi, Sunya Tithi is a "soft" filter — many astrologers ignore it for routine work and apply it only for major events.
