05 — Placements

Beyond the panchanga and the rising sign, classical muhurta also looks at where each planet sits in the event chart. The Placements section lets you constrain each of the 9 planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) to specific houses (1–12) at the event time.

House categories

  • Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) — the four cardinal houses. Strongest positions in any chart.
  • Trikonas (1, 5, 9) — fortune houses. Benefics here are powerful.
  • Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) — growth houses. Malefics here are favourable, not harmful.
  • Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) — difficult houses. Avoid placing benefics here at event time.

Classical placement rules

The "Lagna Shuddhi" (lagna purification) rules from Muhurta Chintamani:

  • Benefics in kendras/trikonas: Jupiter, Venus and waxing Moon should be in 1, 4, 5, 7, 9 or 10. Mercury — when not joining a malefic — also belongs here.
  • Malefics in upachayas: Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu should be in 3, 6 or 11 — never in 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 (which dilutes the benefic field).
  • 8th house empty: No planet (benefic or malefic) should sit in the 8th house at event time.
  • 12th house light: The 12th should not hold malefics; benefics here cost the event their energy.

How the filter works

Each of the 9 planet rows is its own checkbox grid of 12 houses. By default all houses are unchecked for every planet — meaning the placement filter is OFF and any house is acceptable. Switch it on by selecting at least one house in any planet row; the calculator will then require that planet to sit in one of your selected houses at event time.

The recommended tightening for general muhurta:

Jupiter: 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10
Venus: 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10
Moon: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 (avoid 6, 8, 12)
Mercury: 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11

Sun: 3, 6, 10, 11 (avoid 1, 4, 7, 8, 12)
Mars: 3, 6, 10, 11
Saturn: 3, 6, 11
Rahu: 3, 6, 11
Ketu: 3, 6, 11

Practical caution

Constraining all 9 planets at once will collapse the result calendar to zero or a handful of slots in a 60-day range. Start with just Jupiter + Moon constraints, then add Saturn / Rahu / Ketu only if you want a particularly strict muhurta.
