Lordship Association (LA)

Overview

Every planet starts with a perfect LA score. Penalties are then deducted for each dusthana (bad house) connection the planet has. The more dusthana connections, the lower the LA score.

The LA score is always between 0 and 100. A score of 100 means no dusthana involvement at all. A low score means the planet is heavily connected to bad houses.

Dusthana Houses & Penalty Values

Only four houses are considered dusthanas (bad houses). Each carries a fixed base penalty:

All other lordships — H1, H2, H4, H5, H7, H9, H10, H11 — carry zero penalty. Only the four dusthana houses above contribute to LA deductions.

House Command System

Before applying penalties, we need to know how much "command" a planet has over its owned houses. This determines how strongly the lordship affects the score. The system uses House numbers only (not Bhavas).

For planets lording two houses, the Command is the average of both house command percentages.

Example: Aries Ascendant

Sample chart: 3001-02 M, 14-Mar-1987 09:48 AM, Pulivendula, AP (Aries Ascendant).

Functional Benefic/Malefic Modifier (FB/FM)

The relationship between the dusthana lord and the ascendant matters. A functional benefic lording a bad house receives a reduced penalty, while a functional malefic gets the full penalty.

Classification uses the Jupiter/Saturn Group system: the ascendant lord's group = FB, the other group = FM.

• Jupiter Group: Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Ketu
• Saturn Group: Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Rahu

For Aries Ascendant (Mars = Jupiter Group): FB = Su, Mo, Ma, Ju, Ke  |  FM = Me, Ve, Sa, Ra

Only FM dusthana lords cause penalties. FB dusthana lords are completely harmless — their penalty is 0%, not merely reduced.

The Penalty Formula

Where:

• Base_Penalty = from the dusthana table (H3: 40, H6: 50, H8: 80, H12: 75)
• Command% = from the house command system (100% / 75% / 25%, averaged for dual lords)
• Relationship% = FB → 0% (no penalty), FM → 100%

The final LA score is calculated as:

If the total penalties exceed 100, the LA score is clamped to a minimum of 0.

Who Gets Penalized? (Key Rule)

Different entities get penalized differently. This is the most important rule in the LA system:

Key insight: The Planet entity is never penalized for its own nature (own lordship). It is only affected by the company it keeps (conjunction/aspect). But SL and PW are penalized for both their own lordships AND their conjunction connections.

Aspects used: Standard Vedic aspects —

• 7th aspect (all planets)
• Mars: 4th and 8th special aspects
• Jupiter: 5th and 9th special aspects
• Saturn: 3rd and 10th special aspects

Worked Example — Sun's Star Lord (Jupiter)

Sun's Star Lord = Jupiter. Jupiter lords H9 (good, no penalty) and H12 (bad, penalty = 75).

Step 1: Identify dusthana lordships.

• H9 → not a dusthana, no penalty.
• H12 → dusthana, base penalty = 75.

Step 2: Calculate Jupiter's command of H12.

• Jupiter is IN H12 → own house = 100%.

Step 3: Determine FB/FM relationship.

• Jupiter is a Functional Benefic (FB) for Aries → Relationship = 25%.

Step 4: Calculate penalty.

Step 5: Check Jupiter's conjunctions.

• Jupiter is in H12 with Rahu.
• Rahu has NO lordship → no dusthana penalty from Rahu conjunction.

Step 6: Final SL LA for Sun.

Worked Example — Mars (Planet Entity)

Mars is in H1. Remember: the Planet entity is NOT penalized for its own lordship. It is only penalized for conjunction and aspect connections.

Step 1: Check conjunctions in H1.

• Mars is alone in H1 — nobody conjuncts Mars.

Step 2: Check aspects on H1.

• Saturn is in H10 → Saturn's 7th aspect hits H4, 3rd aspect hits H12, 10th aspect hits H7. Saturn does NOT aspect H1.
• Jupiter is in H12 → Jupiter's 7th aspect hits H6, 5th aspect hits H4, 9th aspect hits H8. Jupiter does NOT aspect H1.
• No other planet has a special aspect reaching H1.

Step 3: Final Planet entity LA for Mars.

Mars gets a perfect LA score because no dusthana lord conjuncts or aspects it. Even though Mars itself lords H8 (a dusthana), the Planet entity rule exempts it from its own lordship penalty.

Summary Table for Sample Chart

Sample chart: 3001-02 M, 14-Mar-1987 09:48 AM, Pulivendula, AP (Aries Ascendant). Below is the LA score for each planet across the Planet entity and SL entity columns.

Notice how most Planet LA scores are 100 in this chart — because very few planets are conjunct with or aspected by dusthana lords in this particular configuration. The SL column shows more variation because SL entities are penalized for their own lordships.
