Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna

20° Gemini

Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (1930–2016) was a Carnatic vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist from what is now Andhra Pradesh, and one of the most recorded and most argued-about musicians in the tradition. He gave his first full concert at eight, composed in all seventy-two melakarta ragas, and invented ragas of his own — which is what put him at odds with the sabhas for much of his career. He sang in some 25,000 concerts across six decades.

A blind reading of a chart introduced only as "famous". The reading opens on the family houses, and the first thing it finds is the event that shaped everything after it.

The Rasi chart is the birth chart itself. The Navamsa is its ninth division — each sign split into nine parts of 3°20′ — read alongside it for the strength a planet really carries, and for marriage. Both squares are drawn by the same engine as RVA Softwares, so the cusps in orange are the Placidus house cusps the software shows; the House column in the table below counts whole signs from the ascendant, which is what the video reading uses.

Houses here are whole sign — the whole rising sign is the first house, the next sign the second, and so on. That is what the video reading uses. RVA's own janam kundali chart uses Placidus cusps instead, so a planet early or late in a sign can show a different house number there.

The reading

Whole-sign houses, as used in the video

A retrograde Saturn standing on the ascendant

The ascendant is Sagittarius at 21.89°, in Venus's Purva Ashadha — and Saturn sits in the same sign at 15.29°, in that same nakshatra, retrograde. A malefic standing on the ascendant and retrograde was read as the temperament first: stubborn, unyielding, slow to turn, someone who settles a matter one way or the other rather than leaving it open.

That Saturn follows Venus, and Venus is in the eighth house in Cancer at 27.62°, in Mercury's Ashlesha. The eighth is not where anyone hopes to find the planet the ascendant reports to. What the video does with it is the interesting part: the sixth lord in the eighth, the eighth lord in the twelfth, the twelfth lord in the sixth — the difficult houses have exchanged with each other, which is vipareeta raja yoga, and the damage cancels into result.

The family houses, and the fifteenth day

The Moon is debilitated in Scorpio at 2.02° in the twelfth house. Before any date was named, the reading asked whether something had happened in the family — the significator of the mother is debilitated, and the family house is gone; somebody's health, or somebody.

The participant answered that his mother died. The astrologer asked when. Fifteen days after the birth. Nothing else in the twenty-nine minutes lands as hard as that, and the rest of the chart is read through it: a native who has to build alone, because the family side will not supply it. He builds by himself — the phrase used at 4:49, which is as good a summary of a boy raised by his father and his aunt as astrology is going to produce.

Why the fame is public rather than private

The Sun and Mercury are together in Gemini in the seventh housebudha-aditya yoga — with Jupiter alongside them. The seventh is the house of the public, and the reading takes it to mean that whatever the native does, the benefit reaches him through people: audiences, patrons, consultation, advice. Beneficial results come to him from the public, said at 2:41, from a chart with no name on it.

Mars, the sixth lord, is in the sixth house in Taurus, and Ketu in the eleventh follows it, while Rahu in the fifth follows Ketu. The nodes are tied into the upachaya houses, which grow with time — the structural reason the reading gives for a career that improves rather than peaks early.

Venus, and a life that starts at forty-four

The dashas: Jupiter to 1932, Saturn to 1951, Mercury to 1968, Ketu to 1975, then Venus from 1975 to 1995. Saturn was discounted for being immature and retrograde in a dusthana — if it had come after forty we would have treated it differently, but it came in childhood. Mercury was allowed as ordinary.

Venus is the ascendant nakshatra's lord, it forms malavya mahapurusha yoga, and it sits in the seventh from the Moon — and the call made was blunt: this native's power came out after forty-four years. Venus is the period that lifted him. He was born in 1930. The lift is dated from the second half of Ketu, around 1971, and everything the participant then read out — the Padma Shri, the awards, the international tours — falls inside it.

Reading against reality

10 of 11 calls matched to a documented event
  1. 1930
    What the chart said

The debilitated Moon as significator of the mother, and the family house destroyed. Asked, before any event was given: has something happened to somebody in the family?

    What happened

His mother, Suryakantamma, a veena player, died fifteen days after his birth. He was raised by his father, the musician Pattabhiramayya, and by an aunt.

  2. 1939–40
    What the chart said

Progressive Sun square the tenth house at about ten years old. Not a disaster — but learning that does not convert into standing, and friction with elders.

    What happened

Learning fast and taking heavy criticism from older musicians for it; the dismissive streak the reading described was, the participant confirmed, in both directions.

  3. 1944–45
    What the chart said

A negative stretch called in advance, then release: once he is free he moves forward slowly.

    What happened

Academic study stopped completely and the family put its weight behind his music career instead.

  4. 1948–49
    What the chart said

Progressive tenth house trine natal Sun — the first clean aspect of the chart. An important turning, recognition, someone deciding you are right and giving you room. Seven years after it where nobody can touch him.

    What happened

Recognition across south India as a Carnatic vocalist, at eighteen and nineteen.

  5. 1951–52
    What the chart said

The good aspects still running with nothing to interrupt them.

    What happened

Joined All India Radio and began publishing and recording work, including devotional composition and Annamacharya kirtanas.

  6. 1956–57
    What the chart said

Tenth house square in Venus sub-period, with Venus in the eighth. Did somebody stop him at a signal point? — asked before the answer was given.

    What happened

Became principal of the government music college, then ran into the traditionalists and the administrators, who objected to how experimental he was. He resigned and left Andhra Pradesh.

  7. 1959–60
    What the chart said

The Moon sub-period following Mercury gives an opening, but the progressive tenth house takes an opposition from Mars behind it: the opportunity arrives and cannot be fully used.

    What happened

No event verified for this call.

  8. 1968–70
    What the chart said

Nothing to lift and nothing to stop. Self-effort until the period changes.

    What happened

Acted in films — a small part, then a larger one — and created new ragas, which drew the controversies that followed him for the rest of his career.

  9. 1971–80
    What the chart said

The lift, dated from the second half of Ketu and running into Venus: an opportunity that takes him to a high level and holds for the next ten years.

    What happened

Awarded the Padma Shri in 1971. Sangeet Natak Akademi and National Film Award recognition followed, then Sangita Kalanidhi from the Madras Music Academy in 1978, and concert tours through Europe and America at the end of the decade.

  10. 1982–86
    What the chart said

Venus period, Rahu sub-period, with the progressive tenth house on retrograde Uranus. Called as a stop — unexpected situations, and not to be trusted even though Rahu is connected to the eleventh.

    What happened

Frustration with organisers and sabha politics, and what amounted to a temporary retirement from the mainstream concert circuit through the mid-1980s.

  11. 1986–88
    What the chart said

Progressive Venus conjunct the natal tenth house: an excellent opportunity, a second innings.

    What happened

Back on the circuit, and a National Film Award for best male playback singer.

Birth data as given on the call: 6 July 1930, 6:40 pm, Sankaraguptam, rated A. The chart drawn here reproduces what the video reads from it — Sagittarius rising in Venus's Purva Ashadha with retrograde Saturn in the same nakshatra, Venus in the eighth in Mercury's star, the debilitated Moon in the twelfth, Sun with Mercury in the seventh, Mars in the sixth with Ketu in the eleventh following it, and the Venus mahadasha running from 1975. Events are as the participant read them out from a prepared list, checked against public record; where the call gave only a year, only the year is given here.
