What is Varna Kuta?
Varna Kuta (also called Varna Pontana or Jati Koota) is a Moon-sign compatibility rule in Vedic kundali matching. It classifies each partner's Moon sign into one of the four traditional varnas — Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, or Shudra — and checks whether the male partner's varna is at least equal to the female partner's varna.
The rule reflects the Vedic idea that a husband should carry at least as much dharmic responsibility as his wife's natural disposition. When the female partner's varna outranks the male's, the match scores zero on this rule.
The Four Varnas
Every zodiac sign belongs to one varna determined by its element:
| Rank | Varna | Element | Moon Signs | Core Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (Highest) | Brahmin | Water ♋♏♓ | Cancer · Scorpio · Pisces | Wisdom, spirituality |
| 2nd | Kshatriya | Fire ♈♌♐ | Aries · Leo · Sagittarius | Courage, leadership |
| 3rd | Vaishya | Earth ♉♍♑ | Taurus · Virgo · Capricorn | Commerce, skill |
| 4th (Lowest) | Shudra | Air ♊♎♒ | Gemini · Libra · Aquarius | Service, adaptability |
Scoring Rule
- Male varna = Female varna → 1 point
- Male varna ranked higher → 1 point

Spiritual Significance
The four varnas describe each person's inherent dharmic nature — Brahmin toward spiritual knowledge, Kshatriya toward courage and governance, Vaishya toward enterprise, Shudra toward service. The rule asks whether the husband's natural purpose is at least as high as his wife's, ensuring aligned life values.
How RVA Calculates It
In the RVA Kundali Matching Calculator, Varna Kuta appears as Rule #11 in the Moon-based results panel. It uses both partners' Moon signs (rashi) — not Sun sign or ascendant — and scores 0 or 1 automatically.
