What is Stree Deergha?
Stree Deergha (meaning "long for the woman") is a traditional rule that ensures the groom's nakshatra is sufficiently ahead of the bride's nakshatra in the zodiac. When the distance is short (less than 9 nakshatras), it is considered inauspicious — a condition called Stree Deergha Dosha — believed to cause hardship for the bride or shorten her married life.
The rule is based on the concept that the bride's star should be "behind" the groom's star by a comfortable distance, symbolizing the groom's ability to lead and the bride following in prosperity.
The Rule
Count > 9 → Stree Deergha satisfied — auspicious
Count ≤ 9 → Stree Deergha Dosha — inauspicious for the bride
Calculation Steps
- Number nakshatras 1 (Ashwini) to 27 (Revati).
- If groom's nakshatra number > bride's: Count = Groom# − Bride# + 1
- If groom's nakshatra number < bride's (groom's star is earlier in the zodiac): Count = 27 − Bride# + Groom# + 1 (wrap around from Revati back to Ashwini)
- If Count > 9 → Pass; If Count ≤ 9 → Stree Deergha Dosha
Worked Examples
Count: 13 − 1 + 1 = 13 → 13 > 9 ✓
Count: 6 − 4 + 1 = 3 → 3 ≤ 9 ✗
Count: 27 − 26 + 5 + 1 = 7 → 7 ≤ 9 ✗ (Dosha even with wrap)
Significance
Stree Deergha is specifically about the bride's well-being in the marriage. The underlying belief is that the groom's natal energy should be "ahead" of the bride's in the cycle of stars — symbolizing his ability to provide, lead, and support the household. When the groom's nakshatra is too close or behind the bride's, it suggests an imbalance where the bride's energy may outpace the groom's, leading to strain in her married life.
