Shadbala Calculator

The Shadbala Calculator measures the six-fold strength of each planet in your birth chart and reports the total in rupas, the classical unit of planetary strength. Rooted in the work of Parashara and elaborated by Mantreswara in the Phaladeepika, Shadbala determines whether a planet is strong enough to deliver the results indicated by its house, sign, and aspect placements. A weak benefic may fail to give its blessings and a strong malefic may produce sharper effects.

What Shadbala Measures

Shadbala literally means six strengths. Every planet from the Sun through Saturn is graded on six independent dimensions, each scored in rupas and shashtiamsas. The six components are Sthana Bala (positional), Dig Bala (directional), Kala Bala (temporal), Cheshta Bala (motional), Naisargika Bala (natural), and Drik Bala (aspectual). The sum of these six divisions is the total Shadbala. Each planet has a minimum required threshold; planets that exceed this threshold are considered Shadbala-poorna and capable of delivering full results.

How Each Bala Is Calculated

Sthana Bala combines Uchcha Bala (proximity to exaltation), Saptavargaja Bala (strength across the seven divisional charts), Ojha-Yugma Bala (odd or even sign and navamsa), Kendra Bala (angular placement), and Drekkana Bala (decanate placement). Dig Bala awards a planet maximum strength when placed in its preferred direction, for example Jupiter and Mercury in the first house, the Sun and Mars in the tenth, Saturn in the seventh, and the Moon and Venus in the fourth. Kala Bala includes Nathonnatha (day or night strength), Paksha (lunar fortnight), Tribhaga, Abda, Masa, Vara, and Hora components, plus Ayana Bala from declination.

Saturn5.08.57

Interpreting Your Result

A planet that scores well above its threshold acts as a reliable significator and protects the houses it owns and occupies. A planet falling short of the threshold often indicates that the matters governed by that planet require conscious effort, remedial measures, or support from a stronger benefic in the chart. Cheshta Bala is especially important for the five tara grahas, since it captures retrograde and direct motion. Drik Bala accounts for benefic and malefic aspects falling on the planet and can either reinforce or erode the other strengths.

Why Use the Shadbala Calculator

  • Quantifies planetary strength rather than relying on inspection alone.
  • Highlights which dasha and bhukti lords are likely to give strong results.
  • Identifies the weakest planet that may benefit from remedial measures.
  • Helps prioritize yogas in the chart based on the strength of participating planets.
  • Provides a rupa breakdown across all six divisions for deeper study.
