What is Rashi Kuta?

Rashi Kuta (also called Bhakoot Kuta) examines the angular relationship between the Moon signs of both partners. It assesses whether the signs are placed harmoniously or in challenging positions relative to each other — specifically looking at the house count between the two Moon signs counted from either direction.

Maximum Score: 7 — second only to Nadi Kuta in classical Ashtakuta. When both Nadi and Rashi Kuta are poor, a match faces serious challenges. A score of 7 here significantly strengthens the overall match.

The Angular Relationships

Count from the male's Moon sign to the female's Moon sign (and vice versa). The resulting number (1–12) determines the relationship type and score:

Count (Male→Female / Female→Male)RelationshipScoreSignificance
1 / 1Same sign0Can indicate possessiveness, lack of independence
2 / 122nd and 12th0Bhakoot Dosha — financial loss, separation
6 / 86th and 8th0Bhakoot Dosha — health problems, longevity concerns
5 / 95th and 9th0Mixed — some texts give 0, others give partial; concerns re: children
3 / 113rd and 11th5Good — courage, fulfillment of desires
4 / 104th and 10th0Neutral to challenging — some texts accept, others reject
7 / 77th from each other7Best possible — natural opposition, perfect balance
1 / 7 or 7 / 11st and 7th7Excellent complementary energies
Bhakoot Dosha: When Moon signs fall in 2/12 or 6/8 positions from each other, Bhakoot Dosha is formed. This is considered nearly as serious as Nadi Dosha and traditionally requires careful examination before proceeding.

Favorable Sign Pairs (Score 7)

Moon signs that are 7th from each other (opposite signs) are ideal for Rashi Kuta:

Male MoonCompatible Female Moon (7th)
♈ Aries♎ Libra
♉ Taurus♏ Scorpio
♊ Gemini♐ Sagittarius
♋ Cancer♑ Capricorn
♌ Leo♒ Aquarius
♍ Virgo♓ Pisces

Bhakoot Dosha Exceptions

Bhakoot Dosha (2/12 or 6/8) may be cancelled when:

  • Both Moon sign lords are mutual friends (Graha Maitri)
  • Both partners have the same Moon sign lord (e.g., both Moon in Taurus and Libra — both ruled by Venus)
  • Strong Navamsa compatibility compensates

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Perfect Score
MaleMoon in Aries (1st sign)
FemaleMoon in Libra (7th sign)

Count Aries→Libra = 7 | Count Libra→Aries = 7 | Both are 7/7

✓ 7th from each other — perfect balance — Score: 7 / 7
Example 2 — Bhakoot Dosha (6/8)
MaleMoon in Aries (sign 1)
FemaleMoon in Virgo (sign 6)

Count Aries→Virgo = 6 | Count Virgo→Aries = 8 | 6/8 Bhakoot Dosha

✗ Bhakoot Dosha (6/8) — health and longevity concerns — Score: 0 / 7

Significance

Rashi Kuta speaks to the overall flow of life, wealth, and progeny in the marriage. The 2nd house relates to wealth and family; the 12th to loss and expenditure. The 6/8 axis relates to illness and longevity. The 7th house is the natural house of partnership — which is why the 1/7 and 7/7 combinations are ideal.

Importance: Rashi Kuta at 7/36 (19.4%) is the second most weighted kuta. However, it is also one of the most commonly deficient — many couples naturally fall into 2/12 or 6/8 positions. This is why astrologers look for exceptions and compensating factors.
