The Major Yogini Dasha Calculator generates the principal periods of the Yogini Dasha system — a 36-year Nakshatra-based dasha that runs alongside Vimshottari and is widely used in North Indian Vedic astrology. The Major (Mahadasha) level assigns one of the eight Yoginis to long stretches of life, with each Yogini bringing a clearly defined benefic or malefic signature based on classical texts.
How Yogini Dasha is Calculated
Yogini Dasha begins from the Moon's Nakshatra at birth, in the same way as Vimshottari, but uses an eight-fold rotation instead of nine. Ketu plays no role here. The starting Yogini is found by adding 3 to the Nakshatra number occupied by the Moon and dividing by 8; the remainder identifies the Yogini, and the unspent portion of the Nakshatra gives the balance of the first Mahadasha.
The Eight Yoginis and Their Periods
| Yogini | Lord | Years | Nature | Theme |
| Mangala | Moon | 1 | Benefic | Auspicious beginnings, prosperity |
| Pingala | Sun | 2 | Malefic | Worry, conflict, ill health |
| Dhanya | Jupiter | 3 | Benefic | Wealth, knowledge, favors |
| Bhramari | Mars | 4 | Malefic | Travel, displacement, restlessness |
| Bhadrika | Mercury | 5 | Benefic | Career growth, status, intellect |
| Ulka | Saturn | 6 | Malefic | Obstacles, delays, grief |
| Siddha | Venus | 7 | Benefic | Success, comforts, relationships |
| Sankata | Rahu | 8 | Malefic | Loss, accidents, hidden enemies |
Reading the Yogini Periods
The Yogini's nature is the first filter, but the actual results depend on the strength and placement of the period lord in the natal chart. A benefic Yogini whose lord is debilitated, combust or afflicted will not deliver its promised results, while a malefic Yogini whose lord is well-placed and dignified can give surprising stability. Classical authors recommend reading Yogini Dasha as a confirming layer over Vimshottari rather than a stand-alone predictor.
When to Use Yogini Dasha
Yogini Dasha is especially trusted for short-to-medium-term forecasts because the entire 36-year cycle covers a typical adult life span before repeating. Astrologers use it to cross-check Vimshottari results, to date sudden events when the Vimshottari Mahadasha looks neutral, and to identify pure benefic or malefic windows like Siddha or Sankata. The Major level shown here is the foundation for further breakdown into Sub Yogini sub-periods.
