The Major Char Dasha Calculator computes the principal sign-based periods of Char Dasha, a celebrated rashi dasha from the Jaimini system of Vedic astrology. Unlike Vimshottari, which is anchored to planets and Nakshatras, Char Dasha runs through the twelve rashis themselves, with each sign holding the chart for a variable number of years determined by where its lord is placed.
How Char Dasha is Calculated
Char Dasha begins from the Lagna (Ascendant) and proceeds either zodiacally or anti-zodiacally depending on whether the Lagna is in an odd or even sign — odd signs move forward, even signs move backward, with adjustments for dual signs. The duration of each sign's dasha is found by counting from the sign to its lord and subtracting one, with special rules for Aquarius, Scorpio, Cancer and Leo whose lordships are treated through Jaimini's co-rulers (Rahu for Aquarius, Ketu for Scorpio).
The total of all twelve sign periods always sums to between 83 and 100+ years depending on the chart, and the sequence repeats after one full cycle. Because the durations are chart-specific, two natives can have the same Lagna but very different Char Dasha lengths.

Reading the Active Sign
During each Major Char Dasha, the running sign is treated as a temporary Lagna. Houses are counted from it, the planets occupying or aspecting it become highly active, and the natural and functional significations of that sign come to the foreground. Karakas — Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka and the rest — are read from the active sign to anticipate the themes of career, relationships and inner life during the period.
When to Use Major Char Dasha
Char Dasha is the preferred timing tool for many traditional Jaimini astrologers, especially for career trajectory, foreign travel, marriage timing and the activation of Raja Yogas formed by sign relationships. It complements Vimshottari by showing which area of life rises to the surface, while Vimshottari shows which planet is delivering the result.
