What is Mahendra?
Mahendra is a benefic rule in South Indian kundali matching that checks whether the groom's Moon nakshatra falls at an auspicious distance from the bride's nakshatra. When the count is correct (a Mahendra count), the match is believed to bring longevity to the husband, prosperity to the household, and overall blessings to the marriage.
Named after Mahendra (Indra, the king of the gods), a Mahendra match carries divine blessing according to traditional belief.
How to Calculate
- Number the nakshatras 1 (Ashwini) to 27 (Revati).
- Count from the bride's nakshatra to the groom's nakshatra (inclusive, counting forwards through the zodiac).
- If the count is one of the Mahendra numbers below → Mahendra Auspicious
- If not → No Mahendra benefit (not a dosha, just neutral)
Auspicious Mahendra Counts
These are positions that fall every 3rd nakshatra starting from the 4th — representing the favorable 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 22nd, and 25th stars from the bride's nakshatra.
| Count from Bride to Groom | Result |
|---|---|
| 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25 | Mahendra — auspicious |
| Any other count (1–27) | No Mahendra benefit (not a dosha) |
Worked Examples
Count: 4 − 1 + 1 = 4 → Mahendra count ✓
Count: 5 − 1 + 1 = 5 → Not a Mahendra count
Significance
Mahendra is a positive indicator, not a negative dosha. Its absence does not harm a match — it simply means this particular blessing is not present. When Mahendra is present alongside good scores on Nadi, Gana, and other key kutas, it strengthens the overall assessment significantly.
