What is Kuja Dosha?
Kuja Dosha (also called Mangal Dosha or Chevvai Dosham in South India) is one of the most well-known and most discussed rules in kundali matching. It occurs when Mars (Kuja/Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart (counted from the Ascendant, Moon, or Venus — depending on the tradition).
Mars in these positions is believed to bring aggression, conflict, and potential harm to the marriage or spouse. Traditionally, Kuja Dosha was considered so serious that Manglik (dosha-afflicted) persons were required to marry other Mangliks to balance the energy.
Houses That Create Kuja Dosha
| Mars Position | Why It Matters | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| 1st House | Mars directly influences self and appearance — assertiveness becomes aggression | Moderate |
| 2nd House | House of family and speech — harsh words, family conflict | Moderate |
| 4th House | House of domestic peace — unrest at home, accidents | Moderate |
| 7th House | Direct house of marriage and spouse — conflict with partner | High |
| 8th House | Longevity of spouse — most traditionally feared placement | High |
| 12th House | Bed pleasures, loss — marital dissatisfaction, expenditure | Moderate |
Cancellation Conditions (Dosha Parihara)
Kuja Dosha is considered cancelled (or significantly reduced) when:
- Mars is in its own sign: Aries or Scorpio
- Mars is in its exaltation sign: Capricorn
- Mars is in the same house as Jupiter (Jupiter pacifies Mars)
- Mars is with or aspected by Venus
- Mars is in Leo, Aquarius, or Cancer (some traditions)
- The dosha is present from all three charts (Ascendant, Moon, Venus) in the same person — considered self-cancelling by some
- Both partners have Kuja Dosha — mutually balanced
The Matching Rule
| Situation | Result |
|---|---|
| Neither partner has Kuja Dosha | Best — compatible |
| Both partners have Kuja Dosha | Acceptable — doshas balance each other |
| Only one partner has Kuja Dosha (and no cancellation) | Traditionally problematic |
Modern Perspective
Contemporary astrologers take a more measured view of Kuja Dosha. Mars in the 2nd, 4th, or 12th is considered a milder form, while 7th and 8th house Mars is more significant. Many now assess the overall strength and dignity of Mars (exaltation, own sign, debilitation, aspects) rather than applying the rule mechanically.
