Jaimini Karakas Calculator

The Jaimini Karakas Calculator identifies the seven Chara Karakas in your birth chart by ranking the seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — strictly by the degrees they hold within their respective signs. The planet with the highest degree becomes the Atma Karaka, the soul indicator, and the rest are distributed across Amatya, Bhratri, Matri, Putra, Gnati and Dara Karakas. Alongside the Karakas, the tool also derives the Janma, Pada, Upa Pada and Karakamsa Lagnas central to Jaimini analysis.

The Seven Chara Karakas

In the Jaimini system propounded by Sage Jaimini, the moveable significators or Chara Karakas describe specific roles played in life. The Atma Karaka represents the soul and overall life purpose. The Amatya Karaka stands for career, profession and counsel. The Bhratri Karaka shows siblings, courage and dharma. The Matri Karaka indicates the mother, comfort and emotional support. The Putra Karaka governs children, intellect and progeny. The Gnati Karaka points to relatives, obstacles and disputes, and the Dara Karaka rules the spouse and partnership. Each Karaka is read both in the natal Rasi chart and the Navamsa for layered insight.

How Karakas Are Calculated

The calculation strips away signs and considers only the longitude within a sign for each of the seven planets. Rahu is included by some scholars using its reverse longitude (30 minus its position) — the eight-Karaka scheme places Rahu as Pitri Karaka — but the standard seven-Karaka system used widely in classical practice excludes the nodes. The planet with the greatest fractional degree takes the highest seat, descending in order down to the smallest. Because the ordering depends on the precise birth time, even minutes of rectification can shift Karakas, so accuracy of the natal moment is critical.

Janma, Pada, Upa Pada and Karakamsa Lagnas

The Janma Lagna is the rising sign of the Rasi chart and the foundation of personality. The Karakamsa is the sign occupied by the Atma Karaka in the Navamsa and is treated as a special lagna for spiritual and life-purpose readings — planets and houses counted from the Karakamsa reveal the deepest Atmic aims. The Pada Lagna or Arudha Lagna is the visible image of the self in the world, derived by counting from the lagna lord back to the lagna by the same distance. The Upa Pada Lagna, drawn from the 12th house lord, is read for marriage, partnerships and renunciation. Together these four lagnas form the structural backbone of Jaimini interpretation.

Reading the Karakas in Practice

Place each Karaka in the natal chart and observe the house, sign, lord and aspects. The Atma Karaka in the Navamsa, viewed as the Karakamsa, tells the dharma to be pursued — for example, Atma Karaka in Simha Karakamsa shows leadership and service, while in Meena it suggests mysticism and renunciation. Strong placement of the Amatya Karaka empowers professional success; afflictions to the Dara Karaka in the seventh from the Karakamsa show marital tension. The Jaimini Karakas, when integrated with Parashari dasha analysis, give a refined map of the soul's journey across this life.
