What is Individual Marriage Yoga?
Before examining compatibility between two charts, it is essential to assess whether each person's individual chart shows inherent marriage potential. Some charts carry strong yoga (combination) for marriage — the person is destined for a meaningful and lasting partnership. Others show delays, obstacles, or even yogas that indicate the person may not marry or may have multiple marriages.
Matching two people who are individually strong for marriage is far more likely to produce a lasting union than matching someone with strong marriage yogas to someone whose chart shows significant marriage challenges.
Key Marriage Yoga Indicators
| Yoga / Combination | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 7th lord strong, in Kendra or Trikona | Strong marriage potential |
| Venus strong and well-placed (for men) | Good spouse and harmonious marriage |
| Jupiter strong and well-placed (for women) | Good husband and fulfilling marriage |
| 7th lord and Venus/Jupiter exchange or conjunction | Excellent marriage yoga |
| 7th lord in 6th, 8th, or 12th (Dusthana) | Marriage challenges — delay or difficulty |
| 7th lord debilitated without cancellation | Weak marriage indication |
| Multiple malefics in 7th house | Marriage obstacles or conflict with spouse |
| Saturn as 7th lord in angular position | Delayed but ultimately stable marriage |
| Venus in Pisces (exalted) for men | Ideal partner and beautiful marriage |
| Ketu in 7th house | Karmic detachment from spouse; possible separation |
Delays vs. Avoidance
Not all challenging 7th house combinations indicate avoidance of marriage:
- Saturn influences on 7th — delays (often marries after 30) but eventually stable
- Rahu in 7th — unconventional or inter-caste marriage; may marry a foreigner
- Multiple malefics in 7th — turbulent marriage life but may still marry multiple times
- Ketu in 7th, Venus afflicted — most likely to avoid or struggle with sustained marriage
Cross-Reference with Dasha
Individual marriage yoga must always be cross-referenced with the current Dasha period. A person may have excellent natal marriage yogas but be in a Mars or Saturn dasha that delays the event. The yoga activates when both the natal indication and a supportive dasha period coincide.
Significance
Individual Marriage Yoga is a prerequisite check: even if two people are highly compatible with each other, if one person's chart fundamentally lacks marriage potential (due to severe 7th house affliction, Ketu involvement, or debilitated 7th lord without cancellation), the compatibility assessment may be theoretical rather than practical. RVA evaluates this for both partners before presenting the combined matching score.
