What is Dina Kuta?

Dina Kuta (also called Tara Kuta or Dina Porutham) tests the day-star compatibility between partners by counting the distance between their Moon nakshatras. The count from the bride's nakshatra to the groom's nakshatra is divided by 9, and the remainder identifies which of the nine Taras (stars) applies — each with its own auspicious or inauspicious character.

Maximum Score: 3 — the highest single score in classical Ashtakuta matching, reflecting Dina Kuta's importance for overall harmony and well-being in the marriage.

The Nine Taras

The 27 nakshatras are grouped cyclically into 9 Taras. The specific Tara for a pair is found by: count from bride's nakshatra to groom's nakshatra → divide by 9 → check remainder.

Scoring Rule

The calculation is done in both directions — from bride to groom, and from groom to bride. Each direction yields a Tara.

  • If both Taras are auspicious (Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra, Ati-Mitra): 3 points
  • If one Tara is auspicious and one is neutral/inauspicious: 1.5 points
  • If both Taras are inauspicious (Vipat, Pratyak, Vadha): 0 points
Janma Tara (remainder 1) is treated as neutral — not counted as auspicious or inauspicious. Some traditions accept it; others require both partners to avoid Janma Tara to score full points.

How to Calculate

  1. Number the nakshatras 1 (Ashwini) through 27 (Revati).
  2. Count from bride's nakshatra number to groom's nakshatra number (inclusive). If groom's number is lower, add 27 before subtracting.
  3. Divide the count by 9. Note the remainder (0 through 8).
  4. Repeat from groom's nakshatra to bride's nakshatra.
  5. Identify both Taras from the table above and apply the score.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Full Score
FemaleMoon in Rohini (Nakshatra #4)
MaleMoon in Hasta (Nakshatra #13)

Female → Male: 13 − 4 + 1 = 10  |  10 ÷ 9 = remainder 1 → Janma (neutral)

Male → Female: 27 + 4 − 13 + 1 = 19  |  19 ÷ 9 = remainder 1 → Janma (neutral)

~ Both Janma — neutral result, some traditions score 1.5 points
Example 2 — Full 3 Points
FemaleMoon in Ashwini (#1)
MaleMoon in Mrigashira (#5)

Female → Male: 5 − 1 + 1 = 5  |  5 ÷ 9 = remainder 5 → Pratyak ✗

Male → Female: 27 + 1 − 5 + 1 = 24  |  24 ÷ 9 = remainder 6 → Sadhaka ✓

~ One auspicious, one inauspicious — Score: 1.5 / 3

Significance

Dina Kuta is considered one of the most holistic kutas because it captures the day-to-day energetic flow between two people. A high Dina Kuta score suggests that partners will naturally support each other's health, wealth, and well-being over time. Low scores do not guarantee problems, but they indicate that the couple may need to work harder to stay in harmony.

Modern usage: Dina Kuta contributes 3 of the 36 Ashtakuta points (8.3% of total). It is considered important but is always evaluated alongside other kutas, particularly Nadi (8 pts) and Rashi Kuta (7 pts).

How RVA Calculates It

The RVA Kundali Matching Calculator computes Dina Kuta automatically from both partners' Moon nakshatras (Rule #1 in the results). The bidirectional calculation is performed and the composite score is displayed with both Tara names for full transparency.
