What is Dasha Significance?
In Vedic astrology, the Vimshottari Dasha system divides a person's life into planetary periods totaling 120 years. Each planet rules a specific period (Maha Dasha) for a set number of years, with sub-periods (Antardasha) nested within them. The Dasha period active at any given time powerfully shapes what life events are likely to occur.
Dasha Significance examines which Dasha period each partner is currently running and whether those periods are favorable for marriage, partnership, and domestic happiness.
The Vimshottari Dasha System
| Planet | Dasha Duration | Marriage Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 years | Spiritual, detached — poor for marriage initiation |
| Venus (Shukra) | 20 years | Best Dasha for marriage — relationships, love, partnership highlighted |
| Sun (Surya) | 6 years | Authority, ego — good if Sun is 7th lord or well-placed |
| Moon (Chandra) | 10 years | Good for marriage — emotions, home, and family become prominent |
| Mars (Mangal) | 7 years | Energy, action — can support marriage if Mars is 7th lord; otherwise conflicts |
| Rahu | 18 years | Intense, karmic — unusual marriages; foreign spouse; obsessive attractions |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 16 years | Excellent for marriage — dharma, wisdom, children; best sub-period for women |
| Saturn (Shani) | 19 years | Delayed, karmic — late marriages; serious committed bonds; not for impulsive matches |
| Mercury (Budha) | 17 years | Communication, business — good if Mercury rules 7th; otherwise secondary |
Most Favorable Dasha Periods for Marriage
- Venus Maha Dasha — the primary marriage dasha in Vedic astrology; especially powerful when Venus is the 7th lord or strong in the chart
- Jupiter Maha Dasha — excellent for women (Jupiter is the husband-significator for women); also strong for men with well-placed Jupiter
- Moon Maha Dasha — emotional openness and family focus make it receptive to marriage
- Sub-periods of Venus or Jupiter within any Maha Dasha — even during a Saturn or Mars Maha Dasha, the Venus or Jupiter Antardasha often brings marriage
Dasha Matching Between Partners
The ideal scenario: both partners are simultaneously in favorable marriage Dashas. When both are in Venus, Jupiter, or Moon Dasha at the time of marriage, the foundation is exceptionally strong. When one is in a favorable Dasha and the other in Saturn or Ketu, the marriage may still occur but requires more conscious effort and patience.
Significance
Dasha Significance is one of the most practical timing rules. Even the most compatible charts will not produce a marriage if neither person is in a Dasha that activates their marriage house. And conversely, a person in a powerful Venus Dasha will attract marriage opportunities even if they had previously struggled with relationships. The RVA system displays the active Dasha for both partners at the time of matching so this timing dimension is always visible.
