What are Bad Aspects?

Bad Aspects catalogs the most challenging and friction-producing cross-chart planetary contacts in Western synastry. These are aspects that create tension, conflict, power struggles, or repeated frustration between partners — not necessarily deal-breakers, but conditions that require awareness and conscious effort to navigate.

In synastry, challenging aspects (squares and oppositions between malefic planets) activate each other's shadow sides and can reveal deep incompatibilities or areas requiring significant growth.

Major Challenging Aspect Categories

AspectPlanetsChallenge Created
Square (90°)Mars ↔ Mars (cross-chart)Chronic aggression, competition, physical clashes
Square / OppositionMars ↔ Saturn (cross-chart)Frustration — one blocks the other's energy constantly
Square / OppositionSaturn ↔ Venus (cross-chart)Love expressed as control or restriction; emotional coldness
Square / OppositionPluto ↔ Moon (cross-chart)Power struggles over emotional territory; obsessive dynamics
Square / OppositionUranus ↔ Moon (cross-chart)Emotional instability; unpredictability causing insecurity
ConjunctionSaturn ↔ Mars (cross-chart)The most frustrating synastry contact — energy vs. restriction
Square / OppositionMoon ↔ Mars (cross-chart)Emotional explosions; one person's moods provoke the other's anger

Severity Levels

LevelDescriptionExamples
High ChallengeMajor ongoing friction; can erode the relationshipSaturn sq. Venus, Mars sq. Mars (tight orb)
Moderate ChallengeRecurring tension in specific areas; manageable with awarenessMars opp. Moon, Saturn sq. Mercury
Growth OpportunityIntense but potentially transformative; pressure creates growthPluto conj. Venus, Uranus trine Moon

Context Matters

Bad aspects are never evaluated in isolation. A Mars square Mars with multiple Venus-Moon trines and Saturn-Moon conjunctions still produces a sustainable marriage — the challenging aspect is one dimension within a larger supportive picture. The question is whether the difficult aspects are outnumbered by supportive ones.

No synastry chart is entirely without challenging aspects — they are a normal part of all relationships. The concern arises when challenging aspects dominate, especially those involving core personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars) in hard contact with Saturn, Pluto, or each other across charts.

Significance

Bad Aspects gives an honest risk assessment of the friction points in the relationship. Rather than ignoring difficult planetary contacts, the RVA system surfaces them clearly so couples can approach those areas with informed awareness. Many successful marriages have notable synastry challenges that the couple has learned to navigate consciously.
